The novel is about the love between two childhood friends which sparks to mature love after their marriage. The novel also depicts the relationship between husband and wife through the ups and downs in their twelve years of married life.The story starts with a matchmaker matchmaking for Rajaram, Maruti's elder brother who then falls in love with Tulsi, but her parents refuse because of his poverty. Explaining his predicament to Marutirao, he agrees to marry Tulsi if he could arrange 12 lakhs rupees for him by selling an ancestral property. They succeed after selling their house and land, but not before Tulsi has given birth to a daughter named Vibha. The story takes a plunge when Tulsi falls sick and dies after giving birth to a son Bhagirath, leaving Marutirao and Rajaram with their children. The family faces hardships after losing their land and house. With his deep debts, Rajaram is forced to drop out of school to find jobs which forces him to move around various places in search of work. The children are left with their grandfather who also suffers from paralysis due to stroke.Marutirao is in financial problems too, but he takes care of the children by working hard at odd jobs like contract milking till his sons grow up. He supports them even during the time when they both fall in love with the same girl called Radha. Rajaram finds a job doing menial tasks, but he is soon fired after mispronouncing his boss's name. His lazy ways and lack of effort lead his boss to suspect something so he threatens to fire him. After some more miseries, Rajaram is contacted by a rich man named Kesava who helps him earn some money by auctioning off the ancestral house(he also arranges for Rajaram's marriage).Rajaram's step-mother Shakuntala tries hard to win over Kesava and then she tries to win over Marutirao too. Kesava purchases the ancestral house and takes possession of the land with the help of some other people. Radha stays in their household and is treated like a daughter by Marutirao and Rajaram's children. After some time, Kesava finds out that Radha is in love with Rajaram so he rejects her calls and insults her when they meet in person.Rajaram finds out the truth after yet another betrayal from Kesava when he goes to his house to find Radha with him under suspicious conditions. He is shocked, but walks away from the relationship with both of them because of his respect for his father. When Marutirao finds out about this, he loses trust in Rajaram and takes the side of Kesava. Rajaram feels betrayed and is stubborn to mend things with him even when Shakuntala tells him the truth. Marutirao receives a shock when he finds out that his son is in love with Radha and then after a lot of pain and suffering, he comes to terms with it and he helps them get married. When Kesava finds out that they are in love, he tries to separate Marutirao from his family by hurting them financially. He steals Marutirao's money and burns the house of Rajaram (he did this by using Radha's father's name).
